What is Dragon fruit or Pitaya?

Also known as Pitaya, it’s the fruit of different types of cactus plants. Dragon fruit is loaded with vitamins and here’s more info about it’s–> nutrients. There’s many different varieties of dragon fruit, the most coming being the bright pink outside skin and white centered fruit with black seeds. The variety of dragon fruit with the purple center and black seeds is becoming more common. If you can get your hands on one of these, the flavor is much sweeter than the white centered dragon fruit.

How To Eat Dragon Fruit:

You can simply cut it in half or in quarters and peel off the outside peel. Then cut the dragon fruit into bite sized pieces for your fruit salad, yogurt or açaí bowls. You can also scoop it out with a melon baller for a nice round shape. But if you scoop out the flesh with a melon baller, you’ll get quite a bit of waste. So if you can, try to ball the flesh as close as possible.

Seasonally, good quality dragon fruit ripens at the end of Summer. You’re most likely to find dragon fruit at your local farmers market in warm weather regions. Or speciality food markets and Asian markets will have them.
